5 EASY WAYS to OVERCOME PROCRASTINATION and COMPLETE HOME MAKEOVERS in RECORD TIME
Article by Jan Bay
Are you sick of the dated wallpaper or the stained carpet in the hall but you can’t seem to overcome procrastination that has you bogged down long enough to get rid of it? Have you put your bathroom or bedroom makeover on hold even though you have money in your checkbook to cover it? If this is the case, you my dear friend may be a decorating procrastinator.
Why do we put something that is as pleasing as a home makeover off until the last possible minute? Most people will admit that they are just a tiny bit guilty of procrastination, but decorators and crafters at times seem to go into a slump and have trouble pulling themselves out.
For instance, awhile ago I began to take note of how very little I had on my list of completed jobs. Decorating books, upholstery swatches and gorgeous pictures of rooms I had collected were piled higher than ever before. I pondered the question as to why I had let myself slip into the habit of tossing work to the side until they became demons that haunted me both night and day.
After reading some self help books on procrastination that contained testimonies of other procrastinators, it became evident to me that the more I mull a decorating project over in my mind the less progress I make. The practice of pondering decorating decisions over and over in my mind was literally wearing me out even though I actually did no work. I needed to get back to the basics of not thinking a project to death but to get off my perch on the sofa and start decorating! I can testify as to my own mindset, but I am probably not that different than many other of my fellow procrastinators.
Here are 5 Easy Ways to Help You Stop Procrastinating and Get Some Work Done:
APPOINTMENTS WITH YOU Pull out the day planner and set aside a couple of hours to work on your home makeover. Pencil in designated times each day for specific parts of the project that need to be done. The purpose of this is to gear you up mentally and get you in motion.
JUST DO IT Ideas often pop in our heads when we are relaxing or just sitting in the den watching television. If this happens to you, make it a point to get on your feet and take care of it right then. Don’t add it to your to do list. You remember the dreaded “to do” list? The one that was so long that it was threatening your ability to breathe properly? Actually doing the work is often less tiring than putting it on a list to worry over. Enjoy the feeling of a job well done for a little while before you tackle something else. Revel in admiring that beautifully framed piece of artwork that you hung or the fresh paint that chose for the walls. SUPERVISE YOURSELF Get a time piece of some kind and pay attention. We procrastinators tend to daydream ourselves into a total lack of production. Setting yourself some boundaries as far as how many hours you can remain in a dream world will go towards freeing you up for doing the work rather than daydreaming about it. FIRST THINGS FIRST A triple track work method may not be the best plan of action for you. Decorating projects go faster if you the kind of decorator that can whip up a pretty window treatment while the paint on the furniture is drying, but I find that this kind of pressure is what causes me to shut down and retreat back into my dreamy little world of procrastination. However, if I get the walls painted and things are coming out nicely I might be inspired to devote some more time to get started on the draperies ahead of schedule. In these circumstances, the visual reward system gives positive results. FOCUS Keep your appointment in tact and uninterrupted by letting voice mail catch all incoming calls. Place a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door to avoid company to keep a high level of production. It will be crucial not to break your stride once you get into home makeover mode. Remember how difficult it was to get in the zone? Don’t allow anything short of an emergency to bump you out of it.
Procrastination seems to easily dwell in the minds of creative people. Once we break the hold that it has on our lives we can put all that creativity to work and see beautiful results. Now, if I could just find where I put those wallpaper books! I can never remember where I put things! But that will have to be addressed in another article. One thing at a time?

Give Your Home A Steam Makeover

Choosing Wood Furniture for Your Home
Wood furniture can add a lovely appeal to your home and create a very cozy atmosphere. Whether you want to add just one piece of wood furniture or furnish an entire room or your entire home, there is a wide variety to choose from. You may even be overwhelmed at trying to decide what to choose and what will work in your home. By planning ahead, you can narrow down your options so you can make a wise choice in wood furniture that will suit your home perfectly.
Budget Needs to Be Considered
Budget is an important aspect to consider when choosing between an expensive solid wood piece such as Cherry or Oak or a less expensive like pine. For an even slimmer budget, plywood or veneered particle board pieces are also available which are made to look like the more expensive solid woods. These will give you a visual appeal until you are able to buy solid wood furniture, if that’s your preferred choice.
Variety of Shades to Choose From
There are more shades of natural wood than you might expect, ranging from very light to very dark and many shades in between. Getting an exact match in the shade for multiple pieces of furniture, can be more difficult. But, if you plan on buying all the pieces at the same furniture store, matching the shades should not be a problem. However, if you need to match the new wood furniture with existing wood furniture, it might not be an exact match. Bringing a picture of the existing furniture as a color sample can be helpful. Remember, pictures can make the furniture appear a slightly different shade than the actual piece. You may even want to mix and match shades of wood furniture. This can work for some decorating themes.
If you are starting from scratch, consider the purpose of the room when making a color choice. Color plays a big role in creating a mood in the room. Brighter colors make the room cheerful, more open and energetic, medium colors are more neutral and darker colors create a mood of meditation or intention.
Room Size
Another decorating consideration when choosing a shade of wood is the size of your room. For small rooms, lighter colors open up the space and make it feel larger. For large rooms darker colors can create a less open feel. Putting dark colors in a small room could make it feel crowded. However, regardless of size, if the room has light carpet or walls, darker furniture can provide a warm contrast. If the walls or carpet are dark, a neutral shade would fit better than starkly contrasting light colored furniture or a darker color that would make the room feel closed and less inviting. Of course, there are always exceptions depending on the specifics of your home.
The Maintenance
If you don’t like to clean you may want to stay away from dark wood since it tends to show dust more easily than lighter woods. This is especially true if the room has a lot of natural light. You will have to dust the darker wood a bit more often.
The last thing to consider is the wood’s surface. Some types of laminates, varnish, wood stain, and wood types resist moisture and damage better than others. Therefore, the practical use of the piece is also an important factor in your final decision. This is particularly important for furniture that will have anything like liquids placed on it frequently or a piece that will be more likely to get scratches. So you’ll want to weigh the chances of damage against the look you want to create.
Moving the Furniture
For an easier job of moving in the new furniture, you might want to consider where the room is located. Solid woods are often very heavy. If the room is not on the main level, it could be very difficult to get a solid wood piece up or down a flight of stairs. Of course this will depend on the individual piece of furniture and if you have access to those who will be willing to help move the furniture to the upstairs.
Before purchasing furniture, be sure to think of your options in being able to move it to the room you plan to use it. If you don’t have practical options, you may want to consider a lighter weight piece in another style.
Go the Inexpensive Way
Another option in buying wood furniture is to look at flea markets and yard or estate sales. Some of my favorite pieces of wood furniture have been ones I bought for less than and refinished them myself. You might have to do some refinishing, but this will mean saving a lot of money as opposed to buying new furniture. Some pieces may only need a light sanding. You would have the choice to stain or just use polyurethane to let the natural wood shine through.
Whether you buy used or new, wood furniture can add an amazing appeal to most any home and last for many years.

Choosing the Right Containers for Home Storage
Article by Carrie Tyler
When you are organizing your home, it is important that you choose the right storage containers for your items. Everything from shelves, magazine racks, baskets, and bookcases are considered storage containers. Before you go shopping, consider the material, the transparency, and the shape you will need. Of course, each room and each item will have different storage needs.
Plastic is probably the most common material and it has several advantages. For one, it is the lightest and nonbreakable. That makes it great for holding heavier items. It’s also good in children’s rooms. It isn’t, however, the most attractive of materials. Glass containers, wooden bookshelves, and wicker baskets are great in places where looks matter.
Another thing to consider is transparency. In many cases, clear containers work the best. They save you time by allowing you to see what is inside without opening it up or relying on a label. Of course, in some cases you will prefer to not see what is inside. If you want to hide what is inside or match your décor, a container with color or a design will be a better option.
The size and the shape are perhaps the most important things to consider. Shape is easy. For the most part choose rectangular or square. If you use round, you’ll be wasting space and won’t be able to tuck anything into a corner. What sizes you’ll need is a bit tougher to figure out. You want enough room to store everything in a container, but you don’t want it to be so large that things become hard to find within the box.
You’ll also want to consider where you are going to be storing the box. If you are utilizing closet space or an area under the bed, the size of the container will have to be small enough to fit. When in doubt, it is better to go with several smaller, stackable containers than one large one. Stackable containers are a great space saver.
By taking the time to choose the right containers for your home storage needs, you’ll make organization simpler and more effective.
