Making The Most Cash Off of Local Storage Auctions

Which Units are Best?

Many people often ask me which auction units to zero in on and whether it’s best to buy small or large units. In actuality, the same thing that makes buying up delinquent storage units exciting and lucrative also makes it uncertain. If you are serious about buying storage units through auction, you should stop worrying so much about the size of the units you buy and more about the “storer profile” which the expert storage auction buyers do while viewing a locker before the sale.

Assembling a storer profile on each unit must be done quickly, and it is a combination of educated guesswork, intuition and assimilated experiences buying up repossessed lockers. For example, you might want to think twice about a large unit that you find to be scattered with loose clothes, dirt and random personal items. You can expect that, while there may be some items of value hidden within, you will likely find much more garbage. Unfortunately for buyers that pick dirty units at an auction, once you win and pay for a storage unit you are responsible for clearing it in its entirety, even if you find junk you don’t want!

Conversely, you should be much more interested in a unit that is full of nice luggage, orderly boxes or labeled containers, since this reflects a storage customer who put enough value in their belongings to take care of them and protect them. The reason that a unit fell into delinquency is irrelevant to the auction buying process.

Do keep in mind that it is easy to get ahead of yourself and bite off more than you can chew while buying up auction units. You will have to be able to remove and transport EVERYTHING inside the unit, so reconsider buying a 10×30 garage sized storage locker if you are by yourself with your compact car!

Have Cash on Hand

You want to be prepared ahead of time with the total cash value you are willing to spend during the auction. Although some auctioneers or storage companies will accept credit cards, you will always be fine with cash. Don’t even think about bringing a personal check unless you want to get laughed out of the office when it comes time to settle your bill.

The other benefit to bringing only cash is that it will limit you from overspending on your first few auctions. Some newcomers find the competitive bidding process exciting and it’s easy to get caught up in it especially when you think you see some items of value inside the unit.

However it’s also easy to get stuck spending beyond your means if you don’t get a handle on your limits and knowing when it’s time to back out of a bidding war because the action has passed your budget. Keeping a finite amount of cash in your pocket when you go to a storage auction is a great way to start yourself off slowly as you initially become more comfortable with the overall buying and reselling process.

An Appropriate Get-a-way Vehicle

You never know what units you might find at an auction or how low their final bid prices will be. It can be surprisingly easy to win a big unit, even at your first auction, especially when there is low turnout and not that many competing bidders. However, you want to ensure you’ll have an appropriate means of getting all your new loot home. Many storage companies enforce short time frames for removing all the items in a storage unit you have won, and many companies demand pricey security deposits to ensure you will adhere to their rules.

Don’t get stuck with a two-door car and be forced to make 8 trips to and from your home. If there’s any chance that you’re going to do some serious storage unit buying, either rent a cheap truck for the day or go with a friend who has a large pick-up. This way you can offload everything quickly and be done with it, giving you more time to start the reselling process and begin collecting your storage auction profits!

Choosing the Right Containers for Home Storage

home storage

Article by Carrie Tyler

When you are organizing your home, it is important that you choose the right storage containers for your items. Everything from shelves, magazine racks, baskets, and bookcases are considered storage containers. Before you go shopping, consider the material, the transparency, and the shape you will need. Of course, each room and each item will have different storage needs.

Plastic is probably the most common material and it has several advantages. For one, it is the lightest and nonbreakable. That makes it great for holding heavier items. It’s also good in children’s rooms. It isn’t, however, the most attractive of materials. Glass containers, wooden bookshelves, and wicker baskets are great in places where looks matter.

Another thing to consider is transparency. In many cases, clear containers work the best. They save you time by allowing you to see what is inside without opening it up or relying on a label. Of course, in some cases you will prefer to not see what is inside. If you want to hide what is inside or match your décor, a container with color or a design will be a better option.

The size and the shape are perhaps the most important things to consider. Shape is easy. For the most part choose rectangular or square. If you use round, you’ll be wasting space and won’t be able to tuck anything into a corner. What sizes you’ll need is a bit tougher to figure out. You want enough room to store everything in a container, but you don’t want it to be so large that things become hard to find within the box.

You’ll also want to consider where you are going to be storing the box. If you are utilizing closet space or an area under the bed, the size of the container will have to be small enough to fit. When in doubt, it is better to go with several smaller, stackable containers than one large one. Stackable containers are a great space saver.

By taking the time to choose the right containers for your home storage needs, you’ll make organization simpler and more effective.

Mosquito Bites – Treat With Ziploc Storage Bags

home storage

ZIPLOC STORAGE BAG TIPS AND TRICKS

Applying a Ziplock Storage Bag filled with ice to a mosquito bite anesthetizes the sting and relieves swelling.  If the bag of ice feels cold, place a bounty paper towel between your skin and the bag.

You can also apply Storage bags filled with ice to a wasp sting, which constricts the blood vessels, slowing the venom, relieving the swelling, and easing the pain.  Believe me, with 2 daughters, and 6 grandchildren this trick works wonders when them come in yelling and crying from any kind of bite or sting.  Give it a try and you may can save some money from uncalled for doctor’s visits, but also remember, that some people are allergic to stings so always consult with your doctor first.

To make the process of killing aphids less messy, place a Ziplock Storage Bag around each yellow ball and coat the plastic bags (instead of the balls) with the Vaseline Petroleum Jelly.  This way, when the bags get coated with bugs you can simply replace the bags.

To make the process of killing codling moths or the flies that lay apple maggot eggs less messy, place a storage bag around a red tennis ball and coat the plastic bag (not the ball) with Vaseline Petroleum Jelly.  This way, when the bags get coated with bugs, you can simply replace the bags.

STORAGE BAGS AND MAXWELL HOUSE COFFEE

Paint the outside and bottom of a clean, empty Maxwell House Coffee can yellow.  Pound a 6 foot wooden stake into the ground alongside your tomato plants (or as a stake for one of the tomato plants).  Attach the yellow coffee can upside down to the top of the stake (using a hammer and nail, or an electric drill with a Phillips head screwdriver bit and a drywall screw).  Cover the can with a gallon size Ziplock Storage Bag and coat the plastic bag with vaseline petroleum jelly.  Whitefiles, attracted to the color yellow, will get stuck in the Vaseline on the ziplock bag, which can then be replaced as needed.  Place one every two feet.

Bounty, Saran Wrap and Ziplock Storage Bags

Cut a three inch wide strip from a sheet of bounty paper towel, dampen it, and lay it on top of a strip of Saran Wrap.  Place the seeds on top of the paper towel at the intervals recommended on the seed packet.  Cover with another 3 inch wide strip of damp bounty paper towel, then roll up the paper and plastic together, place in a ziploc storage bag, and store in a warm place (on a windowsill, or top of your refrigerator).  When the seeds begin to sprout, remove the ziplock storage bag, unroll the saran wrap, and plant the strip of bounty paper towels in a well tilled garden bed.  Cover with a fine layer of soil, and water thoroughly.  The paper towel acts as a mulch to inhibit dehydration and soon dissolves, ensuring a perfectly spaced row of seedlings.

ZIPLOCK STORAGE BAGS and SCOTCH MAGIC TAPE

Make a miniterrarium by placing two inches of seed starting mix in a Ziplock Storage Bag.  Plant a seed in the soil, moisten with water, and use Scotch Magic Tape to tape the bag to a window that gets plenty of sunlight.

If you don’t have a pair of gloves to protect your hands from being burned by the capsaicin when picking, handling, or preparing chile peppers, wear a pair of Ziplock Storage Bags over you hands.

There’s many more tricks my mother and father used while I was growing up, but this should you give you some form of ideas on the many uses of storage bags at your home.  You may have a few yourself, and if so, please list them below so everyone can see that you do not have to go out and spend your extra money on things that work just as well.  I appreciate your visiting this article today, and hope you have a very nice and safe summer.  Again, thank you for your time.

Create collapsible fabric boxes for quick storage

Create Collapsible Fabric Boxes for Quick Storage

Home storage is always in short supply. Often, people resort to using cardboard boxes or plastic cartons to store their items in closets, the attic, or cellars. But many items have to be stored out in the open. A great way of creating quick and attractive storage solutions is by crafting collapsible fabric boxes.

Materials Needed

1. Fabric: stiff varieties are preferred
2. Bias tape or binding
3. Stiff interfacing
4. Thin quilt batting

How to Create the Fabric Boxes

These collapsible fabric storage boxes are fashioned from one large base and four sides. They do not have lids. Each piece of the fabric box is essentially a sandwich of fabric, thin quilt batting, and stiff interfacing. You could use thin cardboard in place of the interfacing if you do not care about the ability to throw them into the washing machine.

For each piece, cut two rectangles of your fabric, two of the quilt batting, and one of the interfacing. Then, put the right sides of the fabric together with all the other materials in the middle. Stitch three sides of each piece and then turn it right side out so the fabric covers the batting and interfacing. Stitch the remaining sides neatly closed. You will now have five rectangular sides of the collapsible fabric storage box.

The next step is to sew the bottom edge of each side to the edge of the base of the fabric box. Be sure to stitch just the fabric so that the sides can still fold up and down. After this is complete, stitch bias tape to the vertical edges of the box sides, leaving an extra length at the top. Use these lengths of bias tape to tie bows to keep the box sides up when in use.

There are different ways to finish your boxes. You can just leave the box as-is and use it that way. An alternate idea is to edge each of the fabric box sides with the bias tape and tie them together at each corner. That way, you can create different size boxes for all of your needs.

How to Use and Store the Fabric Boxes

These collapsible fabric boxes are ideal for storage of small items. To use them, simply fold up the short sides. Tie the bias tape into neat bows or knots at the corners.

If you no longer need the storage box, you can easily untie the bias tape and fold the fabric box flat for storing in a closet or on a shelf. These collapsible fabric boxes are machine washable as long as the fabric you use is as well.

These collapsible fabric boxes are both easy to create and easy to use. Attractive and durable, they are a perfect answer to your small storage needs.
